Most candle buyers never see the inside of a real manufacturing facility. This post walks you through the Wickbond scented candle manufacturing process — from raw material intake to the moment a finished, labelled candle is packed into an export carton — so you know exactly what you're paying for and where quality actually lives in the workflow.
Stage 1
Raw material intake & testing
Every incoming shipment — wax, fragrance oil, wicks, glass vessels, dyes — is logged, batch-numbered, and quarantined until it passes a lot-acceptance test.
- Wax: Melt point, color, and moisture check for every drum
- Fragrance oil: Solubility test in the target wax at the intended load %
- Wicks: Sample burn in the target vessel before releasing the lot to production
- Glass: Wall thickness check and visual defect grading
Only material that clears intake QC enters the production floor. That single gate eliminates about 80% of the burn defects that plague amateur candle production.
Stage 2
Wax melting & dosing
Wax is melted in temperature-controlled steel tanks. Melt temperature is critical and varies by wax family — soy typically 75–80°C, paraffin 82–88°C, coconut blends around 70–72°C. Overheating breaks down the wax and hurts burn quality.
Once the wax hits target temperature, we transfer to a dosing tank where fragrance oil is added at the calibrated load percentage (typically 6–10% for a private label program) and mixed for a fixed dwell time before pouring. This dwell is what locks the scent into the wax matrix.
Stage 3
Wick setup & pour
While the wax is dosing, empty vessels move through a wick-centering line. Wicks are pre-stuck to the base with a wax adhesive tab and held vertical by a centering guide. Off-center wicks are the #1 cause of tunneling, so this stage gets tight tolerances.
Pour temperature is another calibration variable — poured too hot and the candle cools with sinkholes; poured too cold and the wax layers unevenly against the glass. Our pour team hits a pour temp within ±2°C of the target for every batch.
Stage 4
Curing
After pouring, candles sit undisturbed on curing racks for a minimum of 48–72 hours before finishing. This dwell time lets the fragrance fully bind to the wax and the top surface set smoothly. Rushing this step is a common corner-cut in low-quality operations — you can spot it in the fragrance throw of the finished product.
Stage 5
Wick trim, top polish, labelling
Cured candles move to a finishing line where each one is:
- Wick-trimmed to the target height (typically 6–8mm above the wax surface)
- Top-polished with a heat gun for a level finish
- Cleaned of any fingerprints or dust on the vessel exterior
- Labelled and lidded to the customer's artwork spec
Stage 6
QC burn test & documentation
A statistical sample from every batch is burn-tested in-house before the batch is released. Test parameters include:
- Time to full melt pool (measures wick performance)
- Hot scent throw at 1m and 3m distances
- Soot generation across a 4-hour burn cycle
- Container temperature at the base
- Burn residue (should be less than 5% by weight)
Every released batch ships with a QC report, IFRA statement, and SDS in the export folder. See our quality assurance page for the full protocol.
Stage 7
Packing & export prep
Final packing uses corrugated inserts sized to the vessel, sealed cartons rated for international freight, and pallet-ready shipping units. For clients exporting to the EU, US, or GCC, we include CLP/CPSC-compliant label warnings and pack a country-specific SDS folder with each shipment.
See the export compliance guide for what documentation your shipment needs at destination.
Why it matters
The compounding effect of process discipline
Any single step above sounds routine. The difference between a good candle manufacturer and a great one is consistency across all seven stages, every batch, every SKU, every month. Consistency is what turns a first order into a five-year supply relationship.
